A presença da Costa Rica nas primeiras posições foi associada, segundo os autores e especialistas ouvidos pela imprensa internacional, à força dos vínculos sociais e à estabilidade interna. "Acreditamos que isso se deve à qualidade da vida social e à estabilidade que eles desfrutam atualmente", afirmou Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, professor de economia em Oxford e um dos editores do relatório. Ele também declarou que a América Latina tem "fortes laços familiares, fortes conexões sociais e um alto nível de capital social".
Além do fator social, a Costa Rica também passou a integrar o grupo de países de alta renda na classificação do Banco Mundial para o ano fiscal de 2026. Segundo o organismo, o país registrou crescimento médio anual de 4,7% nos últimos três anos, com avanço de 4,3% em 2024, impulsionado por demanda doméstica, consumo privado e investimento.
O relatório de 2026 também mostra avanço recente da Costa Rica no ranking. O país ocupava a 23ª posição em 2023 e agora alcançou o 4º lugar, na melhor colocação já registrada por uma nação latino-americana na série histórica do estudo. No topo da lista, a Finlândia ficou em 1º lugar pelo nono ano seguido. Dinamarca, Islândia, Costa Rica e Suécia completam o grupo dos cinco primeiros.
Entre os autores do levantamento, a permanência dos países nórdicos nas primeiras posições está ligada a fatores como renda, distribuição menos desigual, proteção social e expectativa de vida saudável. Na outra ponta, o relatório mantém o Afeganistão como o país com pior resultado, seguido por Serra Leoa e Malaui.
Na América do Sul, o melhor colocado foi o Uruguai, na 31ª posição, seguido pelo Brasil, em 32º. Argentina apareceu em 44º, Chile em 50º e Paraguai em 57º, segundo os dados divulgados na edição de 2026 do relatório.
