Os habitantes foram forçados a embarcar em navios de carga e levados a outros territórios, como Ilhas Maurício e Seychelles, onde muitos acabaram a viver em condições de pobreza extrema.
Relatos históricos dão conta de que até os animais de estimação da ilha foram exterminados para evitar que as pessoas tivessem motivos para regressar. Os chagossianos continuam uma longa batalha nos tribunais internacionais, lutando pelo direito de regressar ao território que lhes foi tomado.
