Quando uma história fascina, abandonamos rapidamente o espírito crítico. Um bom exemplo é a história de Elizabeth Bathory (1560-1614), mais conhecida como Condessa Sangue. A crer na narrativa tradicional, essa nobre húngara teria assassinado mais de 610 virgens para banhar-se em seu sangue e assim conservar a juventude e a beleza. Por seus crimes, ela teria sido emparedada viva. Nada disso é verdade. Não obstante, até há pouco o Guinness apontava Bathory como uma das mais prolíficas assassinas da história.
"The Blood Countess", de Shelley Puhak, faz a radiografia dessa fake news. Bathory era poderosa e podre de rica. Mas ficou viúva e quis ela mesma administrar suas propriedades. Tentou fazê-lo num contexto de forte polarização política e religiosa. Estava envolvida não só nas rusgas entre os Habsburgos e potentados regionais, com os turcos correndo por fora, como também nos contenciosos religiosos. Católicos se opunham a protestantes que se dividiam mortalmente entre luteranos e calvinistas. A popularização de uma tecnologia, a prensa de tipos móveis, tornava tudo mais venenoso, como a internet faz hoje.
Muitos viram na viúva uma oportunidade. Incriminá-la serviria para demonstrar lealdades e seria uma chance de se apropriar de suas riquezas. Pretextos havia. Algumas jovens que estavam sob sua guarda para estudar morreram em epidemias. Daí foi só juntar um pouco de bruxaria, tortura (indistinguível dos procedimentos médicos da época), pitadas de sexo e está criada a lenda.
Puhak faz um ótimo trabalho de investigação. Mostra os buracos da história e nos oferece todo o contexto.
É interessante que elementos usados contra Bathory são até hoje reciclados para atacar outras mulheres poderosas, como a rede secreta de pedofilia no porão de uma pizzaria de Washington que seria comandada por Hillary Clinton.
