Os irmãos Izaias de Oliveira Santos, de 5 anos, e Sophya de Oliveira Santos, de 10, morreram na hora. Eles brincavam de corda na calçada, em frente à casa onde moravam, quando foram atingidos pelo carro.
Segundo a Polícia Civil, Demóstenes Dias de Macedo admitiu ter bebido. Ele alegou estar abalado emocionalmente por causa do fim de um relacionamento. Para os investigadores, porém, não há dúvida de que o motorista assumiu o risco ao dirigir após ingerir álcool.
O delegado responsável afirmou que o motorista deve responder por homicídio doloso, quando há intenção ou se assume o risco de matar, e lesão corporal dolosa, já que havia outras pessoas próximas ao local do acidente.

Uma câmera de segurança registrou o momento em que o carro atinge as crianças. O veículo aparece em alta velocidade e invade o portão da residência. Demóstenes dirigia em alta velocidade, quando perdeu o controle da direção, subiu na calçada e atingiu quatro crianças que estavam no local.
Segundo a Secretaria da Segurança Pública (SSP), Izaias e Sophya não resistiram aos ferimentos e morreram no local. Outras duas ficaram feridas e foram socorridas para hospitais da região.
A estudante Alice Pereira presenciou o acidente e contou à TV Globo que Demóstenes tentou fugir. Também disse que as crianças eram amadas e conhecidas por toda a vizinhança, que está em choque com as mortes.
"Assim que saí no portão, o carro veio voando e bateu no portão [...] Foi muito assustador, foi um baque. Eu não estava esperando. Fiquei com medo, porque veio um monte de gente. Ele saiu do carro desesperado, na intenção de correr", afirmou a estudante.
Após a batida, o motorista, que apresentava sinais de embriaguez, foi contido por moradores e preso em flagrante por policiais. A embriaguez foi confirmada pelo teste do bafômetro, de acordo com a SSP.
Na sequência, ele foi encaminhado ao 3° Distrito Policial da cidade, onde o caso foi registrado como homicídio e lesão corporal dolosos — quando há intenção.
Os corpos das crianças serão levados para o interior de Alagoas, onde será realizado o velório, segundo o Instituto Médico Legal.
