Em publicação nas redes sociais, Marco Rubio afirmou que, até recentemente, Afshar e sua filha viviam no país com residência legal permanente.
O Secretário de Estado destacou ainda a relação familiar da mulher com o general iraniano morto em 2020 e criticou suas posições políticas. Segundo ele, Afshar "é sobrinha do falecido major-general iraniano Qassem Soleimani" e "uma defensora declarada do regime iraniano, que celebrou ataques contra norte-americanos e se referiu ao nosso país como 'Grande Satã'".
Rubio afirmou que a revogação do status migratório foi realizada ao longo da semana. "Nesta semana, encerrei o status legal de Afshar e de sua filha, e elas agora estão sob custódia do ICE, aguardando remoção dos Estados Unidos", declarou.
Na mesma publicação, ele reforçou a linha adotada pela atual administração. "O governo Trump não permitirá que nosso país se torne um lar para estrangeiros que apoiam regimes terroristas antiamericanos", escreveu.
