Garrett também relatou o impacto da descoberta ao confirmar a versão contada por Plante. "Fiquei perplexa". Segundo a investigadora, durante a conversa ela lembrou à mulher que o desaparecimento foi tratado como crime durante anos, com a "impressão de que alguém havia te sequestrado". A autoridade afirmou ainda que Plante teria deixado a cidade porque não estava satisfeita com a vida que levava. "Acho que ela não estava feliz com onde vivia e com quem vivia, e fugiu".
Segundo Garrett, Christina Marie Plante não queria ser encontrada e deixou claro que não pretende revisitar o passado. A investigadora afirmou que a mulher considera aquele período encerrado e distante de sua realidade atual. "Ela disse que isso foi há muito tempo, que era uma vida antiga. Ela está na vida adulta. Ela tem a família dela agora. Isso não é algo em que ela sequer pensa", declarou.
O novo relato reforça uma linha antiga da investigação, ligada a uma possível disputa de guarda. O ex-subxerife Terry Hudgens, que atuou no caso na década de 1990, afirmou que o pai tinha a guarda da adolescente, mas ela queria viver com a mãe.
Segundo ele, um encontro teria sido combinado quando Plante caminhava em direção a um estábulo e, a partir dali, mãe e filha seguiram para o aeroporto em Phoenix, deixando o estado "e talvez o país". "Era uma disputa de custódia", afirmou Hudgens.
Mesmo com a nova versão, o caso ainda não foi oficialmente encerrado. "Ainda estamos no processo de apurar o que aconteceu e, à medida que novas informações surgirem, forneceremos atualizações", disse Lahti. Plante desapareceu em maio de 1994, em Star Valley, após sair de casa em direção ao estábulo onde ficava seu cavalo. Na época, ela vivia com um tio e uma tia, que chegaram a oferecer recompensa de 10 mil dólares por informações.
