Filhos de Gandhy trocam colares por beijo em Salvador
A passagem do afoxé é um discurso de paz que marca o grupo desde a fundação e mantém viva uma das imagens mais emblemáticas do Carnaval da capital baiana. Com cerca de 10 mil integrantes, o bloco é considerado o maior afoxé da festa.
Fundado em 18 de fevereiro de 1949 por estivadores do porto de Salvador, o Filhos de Gandhy surgiu inspirado nos princípios de não violência do líder indiano Mahatma Gandhi. O nome foi adaptado com "y" para evitar represálias políticas à época.
Ao longo do desfile, os integrantes vestem túnicas e turbantes brancos, usam perfume de alfazema e carregam colares intercalados nas cores azul e branca. As contas remetem a Oxalá, orixá associado à criação e à paz nas religiões de matriz africana. Não há quantidade fixa de colares por integrante, cada um decide como compor a própria indumentária.
Tradição e regras próprias
O bloco é formado exclusivamente por homens e mantém regras internas rígidas. O consumo de bebida alcoólica durante o cortejo é proibido, em coerência com o ideal pacifista que orienta o grupo desde a origem.
A tradição do colar trocado por beijo, porém, é o momento de maior aproximação com o público. Ao oferecer as contas, os integrantes simbolizam o desejo de paz ao folião que participa da brincadeira, gesto que se tornou uma das marcas registradas do Carnaval de Salvador.
Transformado oficialmente em afoxé em 1951, o Filhos de Gandhy incorporou cantos em iorubá e o ritmo ijexá ao desfile. Hoje, além de ocupar espaço central no circuito Dodô, o bloco é presença aguardada a cada edição da festa, um grande elo entre religiosidade, cultura afro-brasileira e folia de rua.
