Escavações revelaram a existência de um cemitério destinado para abrigar indigentes em Le Mans, no noroeste da França. A descoberta foi feita após análise de um mapa da cidade datado de 1736.
Segundo o Instituto Nacional Francês de Pesquisa Arqueológica Preventiva (Inrap, do francês), o local, conhecido como "cemitério dos pobres", foi encontrado na atual Place Washington e era ligado ao antigo hospital Hôtel-Dieu — ou Hôtel de Coëffort — fundado no século XII.
A escavação permitiu o estudo de grande parte do cemitério, que se estende para além do local, a norte e a oeste.
Os arqueólogos descobriram e removeram cerca de 800 sepulturas. Entre elas, várias dezenas de sepulturas múltiplas, lápides em que vários indivíduos foram enterrados simultaneamente.
Algumas sepulturas contêm até 20 indivíduos num espaço frequentemente bastante reduzido, resultando num tratamento muito específico dos corpos. Outras parecem conter famílias: homem, mulher, criança e bebê. Estas sepulturas múltiplas são bastante características dos cemitérios Hôtel-Dieu, como já foi observado em Lyon, Marselha, Chinon, Amiens e Montlhéry.
Na extremidade do sítio arqueológico, os arqueólogos também identificaram uma área reservada para o sepultamento de crianças. Essa descoberta está ligada ao papel desempenhado pelo Hôtel-Dieu no acolhimento de inúmeras crianças abandonadas, das quais muito poucas sobreviveram devido à alta taxa de mortalidade infantil.
Após a descoberta, será realizado o exame dos ossos que determinará o sexo e a idade da morte das pessoas, bem como se eles sofriam de deficiências nutricionais ou certas doenças.
Observações iniciais revelaram prováveis casos de raquitismo ou tuberculose óssea. Semelhante a valas comuns, alguns sepultamentos múltiplos podem indicar episódios de alta mortalidade devido a fomes ou epidemias, como a Peste Negra do século XIV ou disenteria.
Diversas pesquisas, como datação, estudos paleogenéticos etc, serão realizadas para testar as hipóteses.

Hôtel-Dieu de Coëffort
Pesquisas iniciais apontam que, aqueles que faleciam no Hôtel-Dieu podem ter sido sepultados em um cemitério paroquial, como era comum. Porém, somente quando esse cemitério ficou lotado é que se considerou a criação de um cemitério próprio.
A datação por carbono-14 confirma que o cemitério do Hôtel-Dieu data de pelo menos o século XIII.
