Ele afirmou que "infelizmente, os esforços na república francesa também têm sido insuficientes para alcançar isso até agora", e acrescentou que a França "também precisa fazer o que estamos fazendo aqui em meio a discussões difíceis".
A Alemanha destinou mais de 500 bilhões de Euros para defesa entre 2025 e 2029. Segundo o ministro, Paris tem que seguir o exemplo de Berlim e "desenvolver a capacidade de investimento por meio de discussões difíceis, implementar medidas de austeridade no setor social e economizar também em outras áreas". "E, acima de tudo, garantir as capacidades de defesa da Europa", frisou.
Por enquanto, disse o chanceler, "só podemos nos defender em conjunto com os Estados Unidos, sob seu guarda-chuva nuclear, não sozinhos. Essa é a realidade". Ele também recomendou "o fim dos debates sobre desafiar a aliança da OTAN e sua coesão".
