Inicialmente, chegou-se a projetar o fim dos trabalhos somente pela manhã. O navio encalhou em 13 de janeiro de 2012 a poucos metros da ilha de Giglio. A embarcação é um gigante de 17 andares e 290 metros de comprimento - maior e com quase o dobro do peso do famoso Titanic, que afundou em abril de 1912, no Oceano Atlântico. Centenas de engenheiros e técnicos trabalharam nesse projeto há mais de um ano para poder puxar a embarcação de 114,5 mil toneladas.
O naufrágio do cruzeiro deixou 32 mortos, dois dos quais nunca foram encontrados, do total de 4.229 pessoas entre passageiros e tripulantes que se encontravam a bordo. A embarcação, tombada sobre seu casco direito, foi estabilizada com centenas de sacos de concreto que mergulhadores colocaram no fundo do mar e com um chão falso.
