Equipes das forças de segurança se aproximaram da embarcação com ao menos cinco tripulantes para identificá-la após esta tentar entrar em águas territoriais cubanas em Falcones Cay, província de Villa Clara, a pouco mais de 160 quilômetros da Flórida.
De acordo com o ministério, ao se aproximar, foi aberto fogo contra os agentes cubanos, que feriram o comandante da embarcação cubana. Ao menos quatro agressores foram mortos e seis ficaram feridos, os quais foram evacuados e receberam assistência médica.
Em comunicado publicado pelo site de notícias estatal Cubedebate, o ministério informou que foram apreendidos na lancha fuzis de assalto, pistolas e coquetéis molotov.
Segundo "declarações preliminares" dos seis passageiros sobreviventes, que agora estão detidos, o grupo "pretendia realizar uma infiltração com fins terroristas", afirmou o comunicado do Ministério do Interior.
Dois dos passageiros sobreviventes já eram procurados por Cuba por terrorismo, acrescentou o ministério.
Outro indivíduo, enviado dos EUA para "facilitar a recepção da infiltração armada", foi preso e confessou o crime, segundo o comunicado.
