Astrônomos registraram pela primeira vez a imagem de uma "astrosfera" ao redor de uma estrela semelhante ao Sol. A observação foi feita com o Observatório de Raios X Chandra, da Nasa, e os resultados foram publicados no Astrophysical Journal.
A estrela analisada é a HD 61005, localizada a cerca de 120 anos-luz da Terra. Ela tem massa e temperatura parecidas com as do Sol, mas é muito mais jovem — aproximadamente 100 milhões de anos, contra cerca de 5 bilhões de anos da nossa estrela.
A chamada astrosfera é uma bolha formada pelo vento estelar, um fluxo de partículas que sai da superfície da estrela. No caso da HD 61005, esse vento é mais intenso, viajando até três vezes mais rápido e sendo cerca de 25 vezes mais denso que o vento solar, segundo os pesquisadores.
O Sol também possui uma estrutura semelhante, conhecida como heliosfera, que se estende além dos planetas e ajuda a proteger a Terra da radiação cósmica. A nova imagem permite aos cientistas entender melhor como esse processo ocorre em estrelas jovens.
Os astrônomos apelidaram o sistema de HD 61005 de "Mariposa", por causa do formato de poeira ao redor da estrela observado em telescópios infravermelhos. A astrosfera foi detectada porque a interação entre o vento estelar e o meio interestelar produz emissões em raios X.
