Brazil reached 52nd position in the Reporters Without Borders world press freedom ranking, released on April 30. The country rose 58 positions since 2022 and surpassed the United States for the first time, which ranked 64th.
Brazil's improvement in the ranking came after a period of tension during Jair Bolsonaro's government, when there were daily attacks against journalists. The country has not recorded any journalist killings since the death of Dom Phillips in 2022 in the Amazon, following a period when 35 journalists were killed between 2010 and 2022.
