The Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) banned the use of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) for aesthetic or reconstructive purposes in Brazil on Friday, May 29. The measure takes effect next Tuesday, June 2, and represents a response to records of deaths and serious injuries associated with the filler substance.

The only exception allowed by CFM is for treating lipodystrophy in HIV/AIDS patients, which must be performed exclusively in high-complexity units accredited by the Unified Health System (SUS) and follow Ministry of Health clinical protocols. CFM had already requested the ban from Anvisa in January, during a meeting motivated by cases of deaths after invasive procedures.

According to CFM, a press conference about the resolution will be held on Monday, June 1, by president José Hiran da Silva Gallo and the measure's rapporteur, plastic surgeon Graziela Bonin. The decision comes after recent death cases, including a woman who died in São Paulo on Tuesday, May 26, after PMMA filling in buttocks and thighs.

PMMA is a type of plastic used in medicine as a gel for cutaneous filling, but presents risks such as infections, necrosis, nodule formation and chronic inflammatory reactions. The Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery expressed opposition to using the substance for aesthetic purposes, citing removal difficulties and risks of permanent complications.
