China launched the Shenzhou-23 spacecraft on Sunday (24) at 11:08 p.m. Beijing time from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China, with three astronauts aboard — one of whom will remain on the Tiangong space station for a full year, in an unprecedented long-duration mission for the country. The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced that the crew consists of commander Zhu Yangzhu, pilot Zhang Zhiyuan, and payload specialist Li Jiaying (Lai Ka-ying in Cantonese).

"Chinese astronauts Zhu Yangzhu, Zhang Zhiyuan and Li Jiaying, or Lai Ka-ying in Cantonese, will carry out the Shenzhou-23 crewed spaceflight mission, with Zhu serving as the commander, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced on Saturday."

Li Jiaying, 43, is a former Hong Kong Police Force member and becomes the first astronaut from the city to participate in a Chinese crewed space mission. Zhu Yangzhu had previously participated in the Shenzhou-16 mission, while Zhang and Li are from the third and fourth batches of astronauts respectively and are making their first spaceflight. The choice of which of the three will stay a year in orbit will be made later, depending on mission progress, according to CMSA.

"The Shenzhou-23 crew consists of mission commander Zhu Yangzhu, Zhang Zhiyuan, and Li Jiaying (Lai Ka-ying in Cantonese). The three astronauts are, respectively, a flight engineer, a spacecraft pilot, and a payload specialist. Zhu once participated in the Shenzhou-16 space mission. Zhang and Li come from the third and fourth batches of astronauts, respectively, and this is their first spaceflight mission. Before being selected, Zhang was an air force pilot while Li worked in the Hong Kong Police Force."

"O astronauta que será seleccionado para esta estadia de um ano será designado posteriormente, em função da evolução da missão Shenzhou-23, indicou no sábado um responsável da Agência Espacial de Missões Tripuladas da China (CMSA, na sigla em inglês)."

The mission will conduct experiments with zebrafish embryos, mouse embryos, and stem cell-derived "artificial embryos" to explore establishing a space embryonic research system ranging from lower vertebrates to higher mammals. The artificial embryo experiments include two technical models: one cultivated on uterine cells and another placed inside a microfluidic microchip, programmed to last five days in space with an automated system that daily changes the culture medium of the samples.

"As amostras de embriões artificiais incluem dois tipos de modelos: um cultivado sobre células uterinas e outro colocado dentro de um microchip microfluídico... Um sistema automatizado pré-configurado troca diariamente o meio de cultura das amostras... O experimento com embriões humanos artificiais está programado para durar cinco dias no espaço."

The one-year orbital residency experiment marks China's first long-duration space human research program and aims to collect crucial data on astronauts exposed to long-duration spaceflight environments. The mission fits into Chinese plans to achieve a crewed lunar landing by 2030, using the Mengzhou spacecraft and Lanyue lunar lander, each launched by a Long March-10 super heavy-lift rocket.

"China is pioneering its first space human research program... This will enable the collection of crucial data on astronauts exposed to long-duration spaceflight environments and ultimately enrich mission implementation experience. The stay will also verify the health support capacity for long-term missions and improve the in-orbit medical and protection system."
