2 sources · 23 Apr 2026 · Share coverage ·

A Lyrid meteor shower will be visible throughout Brazil in the early hours of Thursday (23), peaking around 2 AM. The phenomenon will have better viewing conditions in the North and Northeast regions.

The Lyrids are one of the oldest recorded meteor showers, with astronomical observations dating back about 2,700 years. The phenomenon originates from comet Thatcher, which leaves a trail of dust and rock fragments that Earth passes through annually, causing these materials to burn up in the atmosphere and produce the luminous streaks observed in the sky.
