A group of scientists from different fields announced on Saturday (25) the creation of the Scientific Panel for the Global Energy Transition (SPGET) during a conference in Santa Marta, Colombia. The panel aims to advise governments on energy transition and produce evidence-based recommendations to guide public policies toward decarbonization.
The creation of the scientific panel comes at a time when science has been losing prominence in international climate decisions, unlike what occurred in historic meetings such as Eco-92. The coordinator of the Climate Observatory highlighted that in 2018, at COP24, an IPCC report commissioned by the Climate Convention itself was relegated to a secondary position in the final decisions.
