Seven residents from Xaisomboun province entered the cave on May 20 to search for gold. While they were inside, rain rapidly raised the water level and blocked the only known exit route. Five group members were successfully rescued — the first on May 29 and four others less than 24 hours later, following an operation that used pumps to remove accumulated water from the tunnels.

The underground structure was one of the main obstacles faced by rescue teams. In some sections, divers had to cross passages so low that movement was only possible by crawling. The five survivors were found in a corridor located about 300 meters from the entrance. Besides water, rescuers faced mud, low visibility and difficulties transporting oxygen cylinders and other equipment through the tunnels.

The two missing men had gone in a different direction before the access was blocked by flooding, according to accounts given by survivors to rescuers. In recent days, no new clues about the whereabouts of the two men were found. With the operation suspended, they remain missing.
