Fernando Haddad said on Friday that interest rates in Brazil are unnecessarily high, while acknowledging the impact of the Middle East war. He spoke after a Labor Day event in São Bernardo do Campo, two days after Copom cut the Selic rate to 10.50%.
The Monetary Policy Committee (Copom) is responsible for setting Brazil's basic interest rate (Selic). In the meeting held the Wednesday before Haddad's statements, Copom reduced the Selic from 14.75% to 14.50%, marking the second consecutive cut.
