Iran accused the United States of violating a Pakistan-mediated ceasefire after American strikes in southern Iran on May 25 that killed four Iranian sailors. Iran's Foreign Ministry held Washington responsible for the "consequences of these aggressive and unjustified actions" and warned it would not hesitate to exercise the right to self-defense.

"Os Estados Unidos cometeram uma grave violação do cessar-fogo na região de Hormozgan nas últimas 48 horas. O Irã responsabiliza o regime dos EUA por todas as consequências decorrentes dessas ações agressivas e injustificadas"

The ceasefire in question was announced on April 7, 2026 by President Trump, who suspended bombing of Iran for two weeks after mediation by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The terms included "complete, immediate and safe opening" of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran in exchange for suspension of American attacks, but negotiations for a long-term agreement remained ongoing until last week. ?

New York Post - Centcom Statement, via Capt. Tim Hawkins

"CENTCOM spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins said US military 'eliminated' two Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps boats that were seen setting mines in the strait, and also took out a surface-to-air missile site in Bandar Abbas... He insisted that the 'self-defense strikes' were conducted 'to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces.' 'U.S. Central Command continues to defend our forces while using restraint during the ongoing ceasefire,' Hawkins said in a statement."

According to the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim news agency, disputes over frozen assets, sanctions relief, naval blockade, Lebanon and the Strait of Hormuz remained unresolved due to American "obstruction" as of May 24. Iran demands full release of frozen assets abroad, end of all American sanctions and payment of war reparations — conditions the US has not accepted "even 25%" of, according to Fars agency.

Ucsb Presidency Project Trump Statement, April 7, 2026

"Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE!"
