Israel carried out an airstrike against Mohammed Odeh, identified by the Israeli government as Hamas' new military commander, in Gaza City on Tuesday (26). Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz announced in a joint statement that Israeli forces had targeted Odeh, calling him "one of the architects" of the October 7, 2023 attacks.

"In a joint statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his defense minister, Israel Katz, said the strikes had targeted the new leader of Hamas' military wing. They identified him as Mohammed Odeh and called him "one of the architects" of the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks"

Odeh had been appointed about a week earlier to replace Izz al-Din al-Haddad, commander-in-chief of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades (Hamas' armed wing), who was killed in an Israeli strike on May 15. The attack hit a residential building in the Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City, on the eve of Eid al-Adha, a major Muslim holiday.
