Brazilian Thiago Ávila was detained by Israel on April 30 along with a Spanish activist after participating in a humanitarian flotilla to Gaza. Israeli courts extended his detention until Sunday. Brazil's Foreign Ministry says it is working for his release.
Thiago Ávila was detained during an international humanitarian operation attempting to bring aid to Gaza, a region under Israeli bombardment since the Hamas attack in October of 2023. Ávila is accused by Israel of association with the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad (PCPA), an organization considered terrorist by Israel and the United States for allegedly fundraising for Hamas.
