President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Wednesday (27) that "little remains" for Petrobras to announce whether the Equatorial Margin contains the preliminarily estimated amount of oil, in an interview with Jornal do Amazonas. The offshore Amazon region — stretching from Amapá to Maranhão — harbors 321 petroleum blocks, of which 44 have already been granted for exploration by ANP.

"We obviously have great responsibility to extract oil there, and we have an advantage which is Petrobras' expertise, the best company in the world for deep-water prospecting," the president said in Manaus. The Ministry of Mines and Energy expects the Equatorial Margin to become a new pre-salt area, with estimated reserves of at least 30 billion barrels of oil, according to ANP data cited by Petrobras.

Petrobras received a license from Ibama in October 2025 to drill block FZA-M-59 (block 59) in the Amazon River Mouth Basin, located about 500 kilometers from the Amazon river mouth and 175 km from the Amapá coast. The license marks concrete progress in regional exploration after years of environmental discussions.

Lula also announced that the state company will return to exploring oil in other abandoned locations and expand the Urucu well in the Solimões Basin. "We're going to drill 18 new wells there to see if we can find more. We'll return to prospecting in places that had been abandoned," the president concluded.
