Psychiatrist Rafael Bernardon told the Sentencing Council that he identified in former councilman Jairo Souza Santos Júnior, known as Jairinho, a 'pleasure in inflicting pain' on children, during the third day of the Henry Borel case jury trial this Wednesday (27). Jairinho and Monique Medeiros are charged with triple-qualified homicide and torture for the death of the 4-year-old boy in March 2021.

"o psiquiatra Rafael Bernardon afirmou ao Conselho de Sentença que identificou em Jairinho um comportamento que, em sua avaliação, indicaria satisfação ao causar sofrimento em crianças"

The testimony provoked immediate reaction from Jairinho's defense, who questioned the legitimacy of the specialist's participation. Lawyer Rodrigo Faucz argued that Bernardon did not interview the former councilman and that his statement would violate medical ethical guidelines. Judge Elizabeth Machado Louro reprimanded the defense, stating that 'if we keep discussing angels' gender, this trial won't end'.

The defense obtained two victories at the Court of Justice during the session: authorization for witness Miriam Santos Rabelo Costa to testify in court and changing the order of interrogations. According to the defense, the witness will report an alleged accident involving Henry and his biological father, Leniel Borel.

The trial proceeds under case 0066541-75.2021.8.19.0001 at the 2nd Criminal Court of the Capital – Second Jury Court of TJRJ. Initially scheduled for one week, the jury is expected to extend for more than ten days, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office, with 27 witnesses to be heard.
