The Civil Defense emergency alert system — used to warn the population about natural disasters and serious risks — was hacked early Saturday morning (20) and sent a false message containing only the word "misanthropy" to cellphones in different regions of Brazil. According to the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development, the Civil Defense Alert platform was taken offline at 1:30 AM after suffering an invasion that allowed remote dispatch by someone unaffiliated with the National Civil Protection and Defense System. The agency informed that it will activate the Federal Police to investigate the attack.

Residents from different regions of the country reported receiving, between Friday night (19) and early Saturday morning (20), extreme sound alerts and text messages attributed to Civil Defense. The case drew attention due to its unusual content: on some cellphones, only the word "misanthropy" appeared; on others, disconnected messages with spelling errors, including one with the words "burro dms pprt" in Paraná. The word "misanthropy," according to the Michaelis dictionary, means "horror of humanity or aversion to human nature" and, by extension, "a state characterized by deep sadness; depression, melancholy."

The alert was of the "Extreme Alert" type — a category reserved for situations of imminent risk — and reached devices in states such as Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso do Sul, Bahia, and in the Federal District. The system uses Cell Broadcast technology, managed by Anatel, to send messages directly to cellphones located in areas at risk. The São Paulo Civil Defense confirmed that it did not send any alert through its agents and that it contacted Anatel and other institutions involved to investigate the origin of the message. The tool was temporarily disabled until security conditions are restored.

On social media, parliamentarians demanded explanations about the invasion. Senator Carlos Viana stated that "when an extreme alert loses credibility, the risk is not political. The risk is human," warning that discrediting the tool may lead citizens to ignore real warnings in the future. Deputy Sóstenes Cavalcante classified the incident as "amateurism" and questioned authorization protocols: "Who sent the message? How was it authorized? What mechanisms exist to prevent improper use?", he recorded in a social media post.
