The Mixed Parliamentary Front for Mental Health Promotion presented on Tuesday (26) a bill nicknamed "Brasil Contra as Bets" to ban advertisements, propaganda and sponsorships of sports betting in the country. The proposal will process simultaneously in the Chamber of Deputies (PL 2478) and Federal Senate (PL 2470), with support from 20 federal deputies and seven senators.

"A Frente Parlamentar Mista para a Promoção da Saúde Mental apresentou, nesta terça 26, projeto de lei para tramitar, de forma simultânea, na Câmara dos Deputados (2478) e no Senado Federal (2470) a fim proibir anúncio, propaganda e patrocínio de Bets (apostas esportivas) no Brasil. A proposta conta com o apoio de 20 deputados federais e sete senadores."

The bill provides for total prohibition of betting advertising on television, radio, internet, social networks, streaming and billboards, in addition to vetoing sports and cultural sponsorships linked to betting platforms. The initiative brings together parliamentarians from different parties — at the presentation, deputy Benedita da Silva (PT-RJ) stood alongside senator Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF).

According to deputy Pedro Campos (PSB-PE), president of the Parliamentary Front, representatives from the Institute for Health Policy Studies (IEPS) estimate that damages from online betting could generate costs exceeding R$ 38 billion annually in Brazil. Campos also highlighted that 12 million Brazilians already show risky gambling behavior, while more than one million have a gambling disorder diagnosis.
