President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called on rich countries to do more to reduce global inequalities during a speech at the G7 Summit in Évian, France, on Tuesday (16th). Invited by France — the host country of the forum that brings together the seven largest economies in the world — Lula stated that the gap between rich and poor has been widening. "Challenges multiply, but international solidarity shrinks. The distance separating the prosperity of Évian from the reality faced by billions of people in the Global South is not decreasing," he said.

Brazil is not a permanent member of the G7, but was one of eight countries invited by France to join the expanded discussions from the second day of meetings, along with Ukraine, India, Kenya, South Korea, Egypt, United Arab Emirates and Qatar. According to G1, it is customary for the forum host to choose some non-member countries to participate. As of June 16, there was no confirmation of a possible bilateral meeting between Lula and US President Donald Trump, also present at the summit. Sources told G1 that the Brazilian government had not requested a private meeting with the White House.

Lula criticized what he called a "system that produces wealth in abundance but distributes opportunities in a profoundly asymmetric way." Without naming businessman Elon Musk, the president pointed out that the world's first trillionaire is richer than the poorest 46% of the global population. According to Agência Brasil, Lula also stated that the developing world transfers $1.4 trillion per year in debt service — seven times the aid received from rich countries.

The president also criticized what he classified as "fallacious responses" to protectionism and unilateralism. Lula contextualized that discourses defending market deregulation, minimal state and austerity as ends in themselves had prospered. "Now, protectionism and unilateralism resurface as fallacious responses to the complexity of our problems," he stated. The speech was interpreted by press coverage as an indirect message to Trump, although Lula did not mention names. The president also argued that the fight against transnational organized crime must respect state sovereignty, in a statement that Jornal do Comércio reported as a message directed at the United States.
