Doctor and researcher Angelita Habr-Gama died on Saturday (30th) at age 92 in São Paulo, where she had been hospitalized since May 6 at Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz. Considered a world reference in coloproctology — the specialty that treats diseases of the large intestine and anus — she developed the "Watch and Wait" protocol that revolutionized rectal cancer treatment by avoiding unnecessary surgeries.

"Morreu neste sábado (30), em São Paulo, a médica e pesquisadora Angelita Habr-Gama, aos 92 anos. Referência mundial em coloproctologia e uma das cientistas mais premiadas do Brasil, ela estava internada desde 6 de maio no Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz"

Daughter of Lebanese immigrants born on Marajó Island (PA), Angelita broke multiple barriers in Brazilian medicine. She was the first woman to become a full professor in a surgical specialty at USP's Faculty of Medicine, the first Brazilian accepted as an honorary member of the centennial American Surgical Association, and the first woman in the world to receive the Bigelow medal in 2023 from the Boston Surgery Society.

"Foi a primeira mulher a se tornar professora titular de uma especialidade cirúrgica na Faculdade de Medicina da USP (FMUSP), a primeira brasileira aceita como membro honorário da centenária American Surgical Association e a primeira mulher no mundo a receber a medalha Bigelow, em 2023"

According to a PMC academic journal publication, Angelita pioneered the introduction of colonoscopy in Brazil and founded the Brazilian Association for Bowel Cancer Prevention (ABRAPRECI) in 2004, in addition to coordinating the National Colorectal Cancer Prevention Program. Among her initiatives was the "Giant Colon," a traveling educational exhibit used globally to raise awareness about the large intestine.

"Angelita made substantial contributions to the field of colorectal cancer and was among the pioneers in introducing colonoscopy in Brazil. She often recalled the excitement of removing her first polyp via colonoscopy, personally interrupting the adenoma–adenocarcinoma sequence. In 2004, she founded the Brazilian Association for the Prevention of Bowel Cancer (ABRAPRECI) and coordinated the national Colorectal Cancer Prevention Program. Among her notable initiatives was the "Giant Colon," a traveling educational exhibit used globally to promote public awareness about the large intestine."

Her "Watch and Wait" protocol, created in the 1990s, proposes using chemotherapy and radiotherapy before surgery in rectal cancer patients, dispensing with the operation when subsequent exams no longer detect the lesion. In 2024, the protocol was incorporated into American guidelines from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, being the first contribution from Latin American doctors included in these guidelines.

"Em 2024, o protocolo foi incorporado às diretrizes americanas da Sociedade Americana de Oncologia Clínica (Asco) para tratamento de câncer de reto avançado, a primeira vez que as diretrizes incluíram contribuições de médicos latino-americanos."
